About Us

The idea for Maktub and Co. was inspired by a real-life story and person, who lived more than 1400 years ago. One of the greatest Muslim leaders in history, a powerhouse from the "Khulafaa-e-Rashidun” or the “Rightly Guided Caliphs", Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) may Allah be pleased with him.

Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA), who was the 2nd Caliph in Islamic history, lived a modest and humble life. It is said that Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) embodied humility for the sake of Allah. He led a life of simplicity, wearing rough garments and carrying water skins on his shoulders, despite his immense respect, power and authority. He would ride a bareback donkey and use palm fibers as reins for his camel. Umar laughed little and indulged in no frivolity.

It is said that the inscription on one of his rings read: "Death is enough as an admonition, O Umar." He used to not only wear this ring as a reminder of the fragility of life but also as an offical seal for documents (Al-Bidaya wa'l-Nihaya, Ibn Kathir, 5/214).

This reminder, this story is the intention behind each expressional pieces.
